How do the best recipes come to life? TSCW 2019 and our cooking skills

How do the best recipes come to life? TSCW 2019 and our cooking skills

At U-Hopper we care a lot about the cultural-scientific scene of our city and every year we renovate our commitment in giving a small contribution to the growth and flourishing of the most promising urban events, which represent an important opportunity as a whole for our region.This is exactly the case of the Trento Smart City Week 2019 , an event at its third edition, which every year turns the lights on the inclusivity potential of the digital transformation.

Smart City Week. You may think that we are biased (and maybe yes, you are right!), but this festival means a lot to us.

First of all, it allows us to concretely assess that YES – thank God – we are on the right track!Our everyday-routine, challenging us on a daily basis while we sit at our desks, speaks a pretty smart – maybe too smart – language in comparison to the outside world. After all, we are busy developing new technologies and innovations that allow companies – and consequently economic systems – to effectively face the challenges of digital transformation. That’s just wonderful – indeed, in theory! The risk we face is to create a parallel, hyper-tech, ahead of time ecosystem, which unfortunately detaches from the real economic truth of our times and from the society that we live in. In fact, events such as the TSCW give us the strength not to lose hope and a reason to keep on working hard everyday, supported by the conviction that we generate real value to the economic and social environment at the local, national and international level.

In addition, but in tight connection to the above mentioned concept, what other better occasion if not the TSCW focused on the diffusion of a smart and digital culture, to test our own smart technologies? Since we care a lot about the topics of the Trento Smart City Week on the one side, as well as about the prosperity of the digital ecosystem for the improvement of the socio-economic environment on the other, we have decided to monitor the Twitter coverage of this year TSCW edition with Tapoi , out social monitoring solution.

It is not the first time that we carry out such kind of analysis, but on this occasion we wanted to approach it from a different perspective (yes, not all of us are geeks!), to allow anyone of you, who may not have had the chance to get to know us personally or to test Tapoi already, to settle down in comfort, embrace your own device and get engaged by our story – are your ready?

Summing up, what’s the matter? What: monitoring of the social media coverage related to TSCW2019 on Twitter How: with Tapoi, our data intelligence technology, based on artificial intelligence and semantic analysis.

Chapter 1. Searching for raw materials.

As it happens in the case of any type of analysis, we started our journey by taking the first essential step: data collection! Let’s check if you are paying attention… what is the data source again? Twitter of course! We analysed the Twitter activity of the official TSCW account ( @trentosmart ) – but not only that. Indeed, in our analysis we included also the activity generated from several accounts that have gravitated around the event through the use of the official hashtag #TSCW19.

Just to give you a couple of quick inputs, we collected a total of 187 tweets that revealed a few interesting insights. It is straightforward how the peak of Twitter activity was registered during Friday, September 20th. The social coverage has sensibly decreased over the upcoming days towards the closure of the event. If we contextualize our findings, the reason of such trend becomes clear: even though the TSCW opened on Monday, September 16th, the official opening event and most of the public events have started only on Friday, September 20th. That’s the very reason of the social boom.

In parallel, we were pretty curious to acquire further information on the Twitter activity of the official account @trentosmart.

If we set in comparison the figures of this edition with those of the 2018 , we can notice a similar trend and identify a mutual trait: the social popularity of the event significantly increases in occasion of the opening ceremony.

Chapter 2. Remember to follow one (just one) recipe at a time.

Now that we have collected our raw material, it is time to combine the ingredients to prepare a delicious dish (do not underestimate this passage!). To develop the analysis model over which data is analysed, we need to rely on the expertise of our data-cooks, who enter the scene right now. In the case of TSCW, every edition presents its peculiarities and focuses on specific topics; therefore, we set in comparison the 2018 and 2019 editions on the basis of the analysis models that we have developed a couple of weeks and a year ago, respectively.

This type of analysis is pretty interesting and allows us to understand how topics have changed over the two editions. In 2018 Information and Culture was on top, while Art & Culture as well as Public Administration were the hot themes in 2019.

Chapter 3. The main course.

Clearly we did not stop here, since we wanted to go deeper. We have applied the 2019 model to investigate the impressions and engagement of the audience discussion round and about the event – to make it easier, we have analysed the tweets containing the official hashtag 😉

Even by filtering out the Twitter activity on the official account, the social engagement generated by the audience still reflected the hottest topics of the official programme.

Chapter 4. So hungry!

We cast a magic spell to reach the next level. By analysing in detail the content of the tweets related to the 2019 edition – which by experience represent the most interesting source of information – we have identified the most relevant topics belonging to the most relevant category, that is Art & Culture.

Chapter 5. Dulcis in fundo.

As a last witch-craft, we have analysed the discussion related to the 2019 edition, to identify the absolute hottest topics of the event.

Chapter 6. The voting.

The results analysis is probably the most critical phase, where it is due being neutral and able to assess the value, either it be positive or negative, of our work. In this case, everything has (luckily) run smoothly and we were able to find out many interesting aspects related to the Trento Smart City Week 2019. They are summed-up as follows:

  1. The Twitter activity related to TSCW19 appears to be much more relevant on Friday, September 20th, as the official ceremony took place along with a higher number of public events with a great participation from citizens;
  2. By isolating the activity of the official account @trentosmart, we are still able to confirm that the audience has shown a particularly active interest to the topics of Art & Culture as well as Public Administration;
  3. The comparison between the main topics has revealed that Information and Culture in 2018 and Art & Culture and Public Administration in 2019 are respectively the mostly discussed topics;
  4. In particular, the mostly discussed topics for the category Art & Culture have been Progettazione, Unione Europea, Diritti Digitali;
  5. Finally, the widely discussed topics of the 2019 edition have been SPID, Smart city, Sicurezza informatica.

But let me tell you the truth as I was not 100% fair. The voting phase, it is not only the most critical one, but it also represents the most valuable experience. It is the moment in which efforts bring concrete results to life, the one in which we become aware of the value that we can deliver and the impact that we are able to potentially generate. All of this, relying only on our experience, expertise and technologies, rather than on what-so-ever kind of magic. I know that you can imagine how proud this makes us feel!

I believe that you are now curious to understand what it is like to start a project with us, after reading this article 😉 Just as I am sure that you are wondering how Tapoi works and how it might help you. Drop us a message and find it out now!
